Gargrave Show Fell Race

About the race

The Gargrave show fell race is a popular fixture in the fell runners calendar.

It is one of the best multi terrain courses in the North of England with the route for the senior and under seventeens race taking in a river crossing,  meadowland, pastureland,  woodland with a tunnel of rhododendrons, open moorland and then a steep climb along the shoulder of Sharphaw to the Trigg point and back to a half circuit of the show ring with a last burst of energy for the waiting crowd .

All races begin and end in the main ring , with the under nines race commencing at Noon and under twelves and under fourteens following on before the under seventeens and seniors commence their races at approximately 1pm.

Registration on the field is from around 11am, just adjacent to the main ring and the Secretaries tent.

All runners pay to enter the show but entry to the actual race is free.

Need to know

The race attracts athletes from all over the country, both established and novice runners, often with a few surprising results.

A number of junior runners have featured in the honours at Gargrave show fell races and have then gone on to win County honours in their sport and back in 2002 a young Alistair Brownlee won the under seventeens race, going on to become an Olympian!

A trophy awaits the winner of the senior race and there are cash prizes for the first three female and the first three male runners in each race, plus a cash prize for the first local runner in each race. The local area rule includes Gargrave, Coniston Cold, Bell Busk, Bank Newton, Broughton, Eshton, Winterburn, Flasby and Stirton with Thorlby.

There are also two fantastic local trophies to compete for which are awarded to the highest placed local competitor from all age group categories, the Jack Wetherill Shield (highest placed local female competitor)and the Donald McKell trophy (highest placed local male competitor).
